Have you ever gone to a Windy City Rollers bout and seen girls in WCR gear walking around, handing out flyers and looking very busy but not known who they were? They have fun derby names like Sue Perduper and Tina Flay but you don’t recognize them from the team rosters.

Well, we’d like you to meet the hard-working women of the Windy City Farm Team, also known as the Haymarket Rioters. That’s right, we said Farm Team. The Windy City Rollers are 2nd place in the nation so it takes a lot of time, training and dedication to be able to play at that level. The farm team trains and grooms newly recruited skaters, AKA Fresh Meat, to be ready to play at the UIC bouts.

We recently caught up with the Rioters and asked them about their experiences. Here’s what they had to say:

“My favorite part of being a Rioter is being able to build up my skills without fear of getting killed” said Tina Flay.

When asked why she likes derby so much, Flash Hottie said its, “Fast, sexy, strong, violent women doing whatever, with NO regard for being feminine, or worrying what people might think, or other dumb-ass rules that society makes for women…”

Rumour Hassitt says a memorable Rioter moment was, “having [Madame] Magenta fall on top of me and getting stuck between her legs” and Tru Shove recalls, “being knocked under an industrial sink by Madame Magenta [and] being knocked under the same sink again on the same night, also by Madame Magenta.”

When fellow farm teamers are injured, the girls rally to help out their fallen skaters. Tru Shove said, “I like that when one of us breaks a bone, we are given gifts of yarn, whiskey and Sudoku.”

Payne D. Spencer said, “I love that everyone supports and encourages each other through the times when we think we are too tired or just can't do something. The spirit of these women is fantastic!”

The Haymarket Rioters are coached by the adept Athena DeCrime and the graceful Goldie Shocks, both of the Hell’s Belles. As much love as the coaches have for the girls, they are looking forward to every Rioter’s biggest goal: getting drafted to one of the home teams.

The Haymarket Rioters keep the bouts running, do roller derby demonstrations before the bouts, tear down the entire skate track before the bouts so that it can be moved to UIC, volunteer on numerous committees and skate at least 3 days a week- all for the chance to play with the soon to be #1 WFTDA Team in the nation. Catch them in action before every bout!
