Did you think we forgot about our commitment to the community just because the home season is over? Of course not! WCR is continuing to give back by donating a portion of the proceeds from each All-Star bout to a different organization.
Our All-Star season opener on July 25th vs. Philadelphia’s Philly Roller Girls benefited Vital Bridges. In addition to bout donations, WCR participates in various fund-raising events throughout the year. Here are a few of the major events in which our members have taken part:
Things My Beard Can Lift – Stats god Scorey Feldman collected donations for Off the Street Club , Chicago’s oldest boys’ and girls’ club. For each $100 he received, he added an additional pound to the weight he lifted with, yes, his beard! Since the league’s beginning, WCR has been dedicated to bettering our community through donations of goods, money, and services to local not-for-profit organizations. We strongly believe in supporting Chicago organizations that promote community health, empower people, and call attention to underrepresented populations. The beneficiary of the Aug. 29 All-Star bout vs. Charm City will be Girls on the Run, a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls age eight to thirteen years old. The programs combine training for a 3.1 mile running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the programs are to encourage positive emotional, social, mental, spiritual and physical development.

On May 17, 2009, the Windy City Rollers participated in the American Cancer Society Walk & Roll for the fifth consecutive year. Skating in the Walk & Roll has been a tradition since the league's first season in 2005. This year, 15 of our skaters and referees took the 10-mile path along the lake shore, skating south from Grant Park and back. On Sunday May 21, 2006, over 40 of our girls rolled up to the Lake front to participate in this year's American Cancer Society Walk and Roll. Geared up as always, the Windy City Rollers skated the 10 mile trail along Lake Michigan honoring loved ones whose lives have been affected by cancer. We're all proud of and moved by the generous donations we received this year from friends, co-workers and family. We surpassed our $6455.66 donation last year by nearly $2000!!! On May 17, The Windy City Rollers will participate in the Walk & Roll. This is an important WCR tradition, and 2009 will be our fifth yearskating in this event!

Walk & Roll is a fundraising event to benefit the American CancerSociety, the largest voluntary health organization in the world.Chicago participants can select from a 5-mile walk, 10-mile skate, or15-mile bike ride. On Sunday, March 1, several Windy City Rollers braved the frigid temperature to jump into Lake Michigan and raised almost $1,000 for the Special Olympics as part of the annual Polar Plunge event.
