Come to the Chicago premiere of Brutal Beauty: The Story of the Rose City Rollers on Monday, Feb. 7th at Lincoln Hall. Hang with the Windy City Rollers and enter to win tickets to our Feb. 13th bout!

Now that the blizzard's passed, join the Windy City Rollers at Lincoln Hall on Monday, Feb. 7th at 8:00 p.m. for the Chicago premiere of Brutal Beauty. We'll be giving away tickets to our Sunday, Feb. 13th home bout throughout the night!

As Flavorpill puts it: "The Women's Flat Track Derby Association is currently 100-plus leagues strong (that's leagues, not teams) nationwide. So any skeptics who dismissed the circa-2005 roller-derby revival as trend-piece hype should really see the ladies skate and also catch director Chip Mabry's new documentary, Brutal Beauty. The film peels the curtain on one of those WFTDA leagues, the Rose City Rollers in Portland, Oregon, skipping clichés about white-trash irony and retro-fetishism to highlight the sport's very real sense of community, camaraderie, and empowerment. And kick-ass competition. Presented by CIMMFest and Chicago's own Windy City Rollers.”

Check out Lincoln Hall's event listing here for more info, including a film trailer, and we'll see you on the 7th!

FINAL REGIONALS PREVIEW! South Central wraps up WFTDA regional competition this weekend in Lincoln, NE.

Uproar on the Lakeshore is now dressed to the nines, with the Rocky Mountain Roller Girls, the Oly Rollers, and the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls coming out on top in the West and soon to be joining Gotham, Philly, and Charm City from the East and your Windy City Rollers, the Minnesota Roller Girls, and the Mad Rollin' Dolls Nov. 5-7 at UIC Pavillion.

That leaves South Central to choose its champions, with the Texas Rollergirls—last year's second place finisher and the godmothers of modern flat track roller derby—most likely to be the flag bearers for their region. Windy City fans had a sneak peek last month at the Texecutioners come-and-take-it attitude, particularly Bloody Mary, Sarah Hipel, and Olivia Shootin' John on the jammer line and Belle Starr and Lucille Brawl in the pack.

Texecutioners team co-captain The Angie-Christ taps the Kansas City Roller Warriors and the Dallas Derby Devils to join the Texecutioners in representing this perhaps less-heralded region. "South Central is unique in that we are so geographically isolated," she says. "Because we are so isolated, we have less of an opportunity to play other teams." She calls out Hall Balls and Annie Maul from Kansas City, the 2007 WFTDA champions, and Harazzis Mine, The Shocker, and Miley Virus from Dallas as players to watch for.

Dallas will need to move up one seed to secure their spot at the championship tournament. Angie-Christ says, "Dallas and Nashville is going to be a nail biter! I also think Atlanta will give KC a good game."

Watch the South Central regionals streamed live on DNN, and join the WCR for the final two games at our viewing party this Sunday 10/10 at the Paramount Room on 415 N Milwaukee Ave in Chicago. The bout for 3rd place is at 3:00pm and the bout for 1st place in the Western region will begin at 5:00pm.

REGIONALS PREVIEW! Learn about who's the best in the West.

And then there were six: Gotham, Philly, and Charm City emerge victorious out of the East region and join the North Central's Windy City Rollers, Minnesota Roller Girls, and Mad Rollin' Dolls on the short list of this year's top flat track roller derby teams. The top three teams from four regions will compete at the championship tournament, Uproar on the Lakeshore, hosted by your Windy City Rollers, Nov. 5-7 at UIC Pavillion.

This weekend, who's going to come out on top in the West? "I don't like to make predictions," says WCR All-Stars co-captain Varla Vendetta, "especially not at tournaments where the high stakes make underdogs capable of amazing things in the same way that grannies are capable of lifting cars off of babies in a rush of adrenaline during crisis. I would say it's going to be a tooth and nail fight for the three spots and it would be pretty hard to imagine Oly not claiming one of them. "

In arguably the most competitive region in the nation, the Oly Rollers are currently undefeated in a 20 game winning streak over two seasons and are the defending WFTDA champions. The team that downed Gotham, Denver, and Texas to take the Hydra in their first tournament season includes world champion speed skater Atomatrix on the jammer line, and former USA hockey teammates Sassy and Tannibal Lector in the pack.

"The rest of the west has a ton of equally intriguing talent," says Vendetta. "I don't know what it is about that area of the country, maybe the altitude along with the abundance of out-doorsy types, but there's some incredible endurance athletes out there."

"Windy City just played Rocky Mountain and we were all amazed by the well-orchestrated pack work they displayed. Of course sisters Deranged and Psycho Babble have made a name for themselves as standout technical skaters, but the entire team is filled with machines. I remember watching RMRG run a two jammer rotation in games during 2008. She Who and Frida Beater alternated for nearly the entire bout without ever looking remotely winded. Newly added Urrk'n Jerk'n and Amanda Jamitinya have added even more depth to the team that impressed coming out of Westerns last year. I also look forward to the return of the dynamic jamming of Whipity Pow who was sidelined with injury the weekend we played them."

RMRG's crosstown rival, the Denver Roller Dolls, finished third at last year's championships and have continued strong in 2010, according to Vendetta. She thinks that their controversial "slow pack" strategy will play somewhat less of a role in this year's tournament, as teams have adapted to slow pack play and are more able to quickly respond to keep the game up to speed. "However," she says, "they too have a very cohesive team that can adapt and speedy jammers that will likely make for tight games in this region."

Teams most likely to lift cars off babies include Rose City and Rat City, according to Vendetta. She says, "Rat City has been one of those teams that has been able to remain on or near the top of rankings since '07, despite frequent turnover of major players," she says. "They continue to bring in seasoned talent like Kamikaze Kim, formerly of Duke City and ReAnimateHer, formerly of Jet City. Rose City wow-ed the nation early this year, losing by just 8 points to Oly. They have some impressive skaters including Cadillac, Scratcher in the Eye and Smack Ya Sideways. They also have some of the sharpest uniforms in derby--just a personal favorite of mine!"

Making some noise going into the West regionals are the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls, who in August took a nailbiter one-point win over Rat City and lost to a tough Rose City team the next day by a mere four points. "Their recent momentum may shake up the up-for-grabs spots at Westerns," says Vendetta.

Watch the West regionals streamed live, and join the WCR for the final two games at our viewing party this Sunday 10/3 at the Paramount Room on 415 N Milwaukee Ave in Chicago. The bout for 3rd place is at [6pm] and the bout for 1st place in the Western region will begin at [8pm.]

REGIONALS PREVIEW! Learn a piece of the East.

Your Windy City Rollers didn't just secure a berth at this year's WFTDA Championships, but called dibs on the top bunk, thank you very much, in the North Central region. Joining them will be the Minnesota Roller Girls who played over their heads from 7th seed to 2nd place, and the veteran Mad Rollin' Dolls who hung tough for a 3rd-place finish.

Now expect thunder and lightning in the eastern skies this weekend, as the tough teams of the East fight over the three coveted invitations to the championships. WCR interleague co-chair Jackie Daniels guesses that Gotham and Philly will be coming to dinner, but thinks it's a toss-up between Charm City and Boston.

Gotham's fearsome squad features some of the quickest and most agile jammers that now you see and now you don't, including Bonnie Thunders, who competed on a synchronized figure skating team in college, and veteran Suzy Hotrod. Daniels adds, "Kandy Kakes from Gotham is just an unbelievable defensive and offensive force out there."

According to Daniels, Philly's team of solid players and heavy hitters excel at any position especially the "hard working and darling" Teflon Donna. And she adds, "I have never been as beat up as when I played Philly, not even close."

WCR fans will undoubtedly remember jammer Flo Shizzle ("always a joy to watch, so much fun") from Charm City's visit to UIC Pavillion last summer and, more recently, Boston's beruffled Killary Clinton and Claire D. Way.

And who pray tell are the Cinderellas of the East? "I think Steel is doing well and will continue to impress," Daniels says, noting also that Montreal is making a tournament and Canadian debut at these regionals. "I expect we'll see great things from them--fascinating with their tough neon athletics."

The regional and championship tournaments will be broadcast on the Derby News Network, or you can even join the WCR at our viewing party this Sunday 9/26 at the Paramount Room on 415 N Milwaukee Ave in Chicago. The bout for 3rd place is at 3pm and the bout for 1st place in the Eastern region will begin at 6pm. Be there!
