Since June of 2009, when the Manic Attackers dethroned Hell’s Belles and took the Ivy King Cup as champions of Chicago’s Windy City Rollers, questions have swirled in anticipation of wholesale roster changes across the four home-league teams. How would the Belles fare, returning just two skaters with a full year’s experience? Did all-world Fury jammer Kola Loka lose a step while out last year on maternity leave? Who among last year’s up-and-comers would break out as new stars? How would Grand Raggedy transfer Jackie Daniels look? And, most intriguing of all, would Chicago fans turn out in big numbers to welcome the new season? Questions answered.

WCR Defeats Rose City in Front of Record Crowd, 113-73
By Mike Ondolences
Portland’s Rose City Rollers visited Chicago on Saturday night to take on the Windy City Rollers All-Stars, the 2009 North Central Region champs. Rose City, eliminated in the Quarterfinals of the Western Regionals, may have hoped to slip in under the radar and catch the All-Stars focused forward on WFTDA Nationals next month. Three quarters of the way through the bout, the teams were knotted at 70, but a group of four-year starters took over the pack late in ...

In a smashing home opener for the WCR All-Stars 2009 season, the All-Stars, previously undefeated at home, experienced their first loss of the season to the Philly Roller Girls Liberty Belles, 70-69. The only team never to play for the WCR championship, the Manics, held a 3-14 record over the past three years. History favored the Belles. On this night, however, history took a lesson from Ying O’Fire, who scored 19 points on the twelfth jam of the second half and gave the Manics a lead they would not relinquish in route to a 123-112 victory marked by huge hits and heated tempers. The Assassins in Black began this game painfully behind in the tie-breaker category—points scored/points allowed—and needed a win to get into the Ivy King Cup Championship game. The Fury, however, not to be denied their first win of the season, took a 24-12 lead in the eighth jam of the game and never gave it up. Drawing on the finesse of Eva Dead, the jaw-dropping agility of Yvette YourMaker, and punishing defense supplied by Tori Adore and Go-Go Hatchet, the Fury prevailed 93-87.

The Belles' Megan Formor seemed to operate as a one-woman army, intimidating most of the XX jamming roster into a summarily low-scoring evening. Final score: Hell's Belles 140 - Double Crossers 60. The evening's second match-up, which paired the Manics and The Fury, may not have been a surprise--Final score: Manic Attackers 150 - The Fury 74
