Interview with GoGo Hatchet, WCR All-Stars

The Windy City Rollers' August 29 bout will be an exciting one! In addition to our fearsome WCR All-Stars' bout against the Charm City All-Stars. I talked with skaters from both teams, and this time featured some of the 2009 WCR All-Star rookies. Loco Chanel: This is your first year on the WCR All-Stars-- and you've all gotten a good amount of play and made huge contributions to the team on the track. How has the experience compared with your expectations?

GoGo Hatchet: The all-star team experience has been amazing, I feel so lucky to be a part of a great team. The support we get from the league is unbelievable. It is so great to look at a girl skating next to you and think, "I know she wants this just as bad as me, so I have to work harder for her and my team."

This team is so phenomenal and I want to thank our wonderful captains, Varla and Malice, for allowing me to skate in some awesome games this year.
What's been your most memorable All-Star skating experience thus far?

Just being able to learn and grow along side some of the best derby players in the country is what I will remember most. This is a great team to be a part of.
Also, the Boston game at ECE-- I was the only new girl on the roster and I felt immense pressure to prove myself as a valuable team member. I wanted my teammates to know they could trust me on the track.
You had an opportunity to watch Charm play, both last year at Regionals (vs. Windy City) and this year at ECE. What are your thoughts about them as a team from seeing them play? How are the All-Stars prepping for this bout?

Charm City is an amazing team, they are what modern roller derby is all about: hard work and dedication. They have worked their way up from the lower rankings to become one of the best teams in roller derby. When I saw them at last year's regionals I thought to myself, "This team is going to be a force to reckon with next year."

As for game prep, I think we try to focus on our game and to continually improve our teamwork. If we play our game, tight and fast, I don't think it matters who we face. For us, it is all about working together to become the fiercest derby team on the planet!
Regionals are also right around the corner and WCR's first bout is against the host, the Minnesota Rollergirls. Any thoughts, expectations, predictions about the Brawl of America?

Holy crap am I excited to play in my first tournament!! The tourneys are what we train for all year. That first game is going to be tough, I have heard the fans in Minnesota really love their derby. It is never easy to play against the home team crowd. Since we are #1 in the North Central, we have a target on our back. We are really going to have to fight hard to retain our #1 seed.

I am really looking forward to watching some first-class derby, the Brawl is going to be an amazing tournament. Bring on the concrete floor!
