Interview with Ruth Enasia & Georgia on Yer Behind

As a preview for the WCR All-Stars' second home bout on August 29 (vs Baltimore’s Charm City All-Stars), I talked to some of the skaters on both teams about their thoughts on the big game. Get your tickets at http://windycityrollers.com/tickets/default.aspx.

Loco Chanel: This is your first year on the WCR All-Stars. How has the experience compared with your expectations?

Ruth Enasia: I expected it to be a challenge, physically and mentally, and it is! I go to each practice reminding myself that I'm working with some of the best skaters in the nation, and that has helped pull me through any kind of self-doubt.

Georgia on Yer Behind: It has been so exciting to play with this group of ladies, and their assistance has been invaluable. It was a little intimidating to play with some of the best athletes in this sport nationally, and playing with the All-Stars means upping the speed and the experience on the track. But everyone is so helpful and while there’s been some frustration, it never affected me negatively, but rather made me want to work harder to be a better teammate on the track.

Also, I think our class of All-Star "newbs" got a double-whammy with the coinciding transition of not only playing at the All-Star level but under the 4.0 rule set, which has really sped up the game. I'm loving every second of it.

What's been your most memorable All-Star skating experience thus far?

Definitely my first bout with the All-Stars back in April vs. St. Louis-- it was a closed bout so the audience was mostly friends and family, but I really wanted to play well for my teammates and captains. My heart was pounding as we warmed up but then the first jam started and everything else fell away and I just concentrated on playing the game.

I had a 14-point jam at our last game in Seattle, and was told it helped change the pace of the game. I felt very proud about it, and having my team mates congratulate me on it was a moment where I felt really accepted.

You had an opportunity to watch Charm play, both last year at Regionals (vs. Windy City) and this year at ECE. What are your thoughts about them as a team from seeing them play? How are the All-Stars prepping for this bout?

Charm is a very smart and hard hitting team. They know the rules well and use them to their advantage. They've been quite a prolific team this year, bouting a LOT, even twice in one night. They're a strong team, so we have definitely been preparing to meet a formidable opponent.

They seem to play a very deliberate, physical game. They also have some extremely savvy technical skaters. Together, that means that we will have to be mentally and physically ready to adjust for big blocks and smart moves, and that's exactly what we're preparing for.

Regionals are also right around the corner and WCR's first bout is against the host, the Minnesota Rollergirls. Any thoughts, expectations, predictions about the Brawl of America?

One year can completely transform the personality and abilities of a team, so I am very excited for us to sink our teeth into tournament season and see how far the other teams have come. As far as the first bout against Minnesota, it's the first bout on the way to Nationals, and I take that as seriously as I would the final championship bout.

I'm also very excited that my sister's league, Burning River from Cleveland [who’ll be playing the Second Wind in the early-bird bout!], made it into the North Central Regionals this year.

I can't predict anything, but I'm pretty thrilled to get a chance to play at the Roy - it looks like an incredible venue!
