Nationally Ranked Women's Flat Track Roller Derby

Interview with Sargentina, The Fury

Interviews, Skaters » Posted January 25th, 2010 by Loco Chanel

Throughout the course of our 2010 Season (our SIXTH! Do you believe it!) I'll be interviewing our league skaters for the blog. Be sure to check out our HOME OPENER on January 30 at UIC Pavilion. Tickets and more information are available at http://www.windycityrollers.com!

This is your second year with the Windy City Rollers, can you compare and contrast the feelings of going into this season vs your rookie season?

Sargentina: This season is a whole new world! I've had a season of learning and skating under my belt, along with a season on the Windy City Rollers B-team, The Second Wind, which means I'm not AS paralyzed by my nerves. The experience of playing with members of different home teams and playing opponents from other cities really allowed me to grow as a player. I feel much more confident on wheels, and I feel like I finally don't skate like a deer in the headlights. I didn't really have any idea what was to come at the beginning of last season. This season, I know more what to expect, and I'm moving forward with goals and a drive to kill. We've also had some GREAT additions to the Fury (Ska Face, Take-Out Box, the returning Kola Loka, and the lovely transfer Jackie Daniels), who fit the group perfectly. It's going to be a great season!

What was your sports background prior to joining WCR?

I have been involved with sports my whole life. I played high school basketball and track, and softball into college. Since then, I've stayed active by running, playing in league sports, and skiing. Derby allowed me to build off of my competitive nature and natural inclination for sports training.

At scrimmage and in the Fury's preseason bout in Ft. Wayne, you've been jamming as much as you've been blocking. How has your training changed as you're working on this new role on your team?

Crazy, huh?? I've been working hard on my endurance, since I need to keep going round and round! I haven't changed my training too much, because I want to be solid as a blocker OR a jammer. Either way, I want to play aggressively, agile, and fast. No matter my role in that particular jam.

What's been your favorite WCR memory/ experience thus far?

Oooh, there have been a bunch! I think winning our last game of the season last year was a much needed happy ending for the team. We really needed that to keep up the morale, and gave us the drive to work our butts off coming into this season. It was so fun to play and to gel as a team. It's the season of the Fury!! TFFY!
