Nationally Ranked Women's Flat Track Roller Derby

Interview with Wreck N Shrew, WCR All-Stars

Skaters » Posted November 8th, 2009 by Loco Chanel

In the short days leading up to the WCR All-Stars trip to Philly for the Declaration of Derby, the 2009 WFTDA National Championships, I talked with some of the skaters to learn more about their experience on the team and how they're preparing for the big event.

Loco Chanel: This is your second year on the All-Star team-- you joined last year mid-season and were rostered (and got some good play!) for the Championship game at last year's Nationals. How would you compare your experience and expectations this year versus last year?

Wreck N Shrew: Last year was a transformational year for me! I practically had to relearn how to skate from my major weight loss due to praticing A LOT, and also having other activities outside of derby. My experience last year was mostly me really getting down and learning the game and how to play my role as a team member.

It was a big shock when I was out there next to Beyonslay and Cheapskate was coming up fast. That first hit made me focus. I took that feeling and play ever game like it's the Championship. This year, I feel more confident on my skates and really feel that I make an impact for the team. I learn faster, I play harder, and have faith in everyone I'm on the track with.

Due to a family wedding, you were unable to make the trip up to Minnesota to play at Regionals. If you're anything like me, I'm assuming that you were manicly texting folks for score updates and the like. Did that go over well with your family?

It's amazing what an iPhone can do-- I was reading the the textcast!

One thing my family knows most about me is when I have a passion for something, I can't stop talking about it! I must have updated my mom on the score 30 times. It worked out nicely around the wedding that no one noticed me fiddling with the phone! Ha!
The best part was that a few of my brother's friends asked me all kind of questions about the game and wanted updates too.

Unlike previous years, it seems like WCR is widely regarded as a top contender at this year's Nationals. How are you approaching the final weeks of training before the big tournament?

As the same as the other All-Stars, I have been practicing 6-8 hours a week for the last 3 months, taking a day here and there for prevention of injury. I have been really keeping myself on the straight, and not getting all worked up ... I'm pumped, but calm. Just knowing I will give my team a 100%!

You're one of the only out-of-town transfers we've had on our All-Star team--you started your derby career skating with Detroit. Can you describe what it was like to play your old team when WCR played DDG back in March?

That was an awesome game for me--at the end I felt I was getting picked on by some Detroit gals, but for the most part, I played a great game.

As much as I love Detroit, Chicago and WCR have become my home and family. I play for my team here as much as I did for my old home team, The Devil's Night Dames, back in Detroit.

Detroit's also going to Nationals, but got, quite possibly, the worst opening round draw against 2008 Champion Gotham. Of course, that might be the most exciting upset ever if they can get it. What are your thoughts about your former team's chances?

As much as I want to kick Gotham's butt [!!!] I would be delighted to see Detroit triumph over them!
