Nationally Ranked Women's Flat Track Roller Derby

Interview with Yvette Yourmaker, WCR All-Stars

Following the WCR All-Stars' dominating performance at the Brawl of America, I talked with some of the team members about their experience at the tournament, and also preparing for Nationals.

Loco Chanel: You've been on the All-Star team for 3 years now-- this is your third tournament season and will be your third trip to Nationals. How would you compare each season?

The first year we were wide-eyed and just put our heads down to charge forward. We made it to Nationals and walked out of the 2007 tournament determined to bring ourselves to the next level. Last year we did just that and jumped to #2 in the country.

Especially at tournament time, I'm highly aware of how much confidence I have in our team. We'll be in the huddle and I'll find myself feeling so confident as I look around at everyone's faces. That is what I'm carrying with me to this year's Nationals.

For most of your career with WCR, you've been one of the most consistently solid and versatile players in the league, yet have somehow managed to stay under the radar outside of Chicago. What do you credit to your continued success as a player?

Ooh, thanks for calling me successful. I'm in the mix of all these amazing derby players in the WCR as well as from across the country. It seems there is always something another player has in their tool box that I want in mine. That's good fuel.

More importantly, though, I think every successful athlete has a drive to do their best - which means bringing intensity to every practice so you can be successful during competition when it counts.

In addition to being an All-Star, and a Fury, you were WCR's Training Coordinator last season and are the Training Chair (along with Nina Millimeter) this year. Can you tell us more about what these off-the-track jobs for WCR entail?

Roller derby being such a young sport means we don't have much concrete information to utilize in our training. So, like the rest of the roller derby world, we're figuring it out as we go along. One of my main goals has been to break down what the elements of an excellent derby player are so they can be passed on through Training.

As is the foundation of roller derby - for the skaters by the skaters - it's been cool to reach out to many different leaguemates - skaters, refs, stats, medical - and ask for their input about what they know best. I hope we can put it all together to make a solid framework for the WCR.

I know you and the rest of the team have your eyes on the big prize in Philly in November, but you'll need to beat either the South Central #2 or West #3 to advance to the top 4. South Central #2 is Kansas City, and the West #3 will be determined this weekend at the last of the Regional Tournaments. Regardless who comes out ahead in the first round, it's likely that it'll be against a team you haven't seen this season. Facing unknown competition in the big games, as well as keeping focus on the big games... what are your thoughts going into the 6 weeks of training before Nationals?

It's the Owl of the Tiger - which means we have our eye on the prize.

As for playing a team we haven't seen this season, that's how I like it. When we bout a team we've played before, or even beaten, I have the mindset that it is going to be a battle.

You never know, leagues can come out of nowhere with a punch. We did.
