Ivy King Cup Preview

The 2010 Windy City Rollers local season comes to fruition on Saturday night as the Double Crossers and The Fury will play one more match, the winner of which will claim the coveted Ivy King Cup. Coming into this game The Fury will be the favorite finishing the regular season with a record of five wins and one loss, and winning both matches this season against the Double Crossers, who won four games and lost two. The Fury have competed for the Ivy King Cup twice, winning both matches in 2005 and 2006. The Double Crossers have gone to the championship twice, and won in 2007.

The Fury come into this game with a ton of talent on their side in their pursuit to go from last place in 2009 to taking the whole shebang this year. A key factor in this transformation has been the addition of three core agile jammers. The 2008 league MVP, Kola Loka, took a season off to have a baby, and this year holds the league's season record for most points scored at 273. The other two are a pair of transfers, Ska Face from the Rogue Rollergirls out of North Carolina, and Jackie Daniels, a national superstar out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Fury pack is led by team captains Go-Go Hatchett and Tori Adore. They get additional help from Sargentina, who led the league in jammer knock downs (15), as well solid blockers Red Zeppelin, Dee Monica and Ivy Sedation.

The Double Crossers will come in as the underdog of this championship game. They have overcome quite a bit to get to this point. During one game this season, they were able to win despite only having nine skaters, two of which were skating injured. The Double Crossers have relied on strong pack play this year, led by captain Georgia On Yer Behind. Georgia has been an absolute blocking machine this year leading the league in defensive blocks with 144, eclipsing everyone else’s numbers. Blocker Norma Lee Wright came into her own this season with solid defensive play and a league leading 40 offensive assists. The blocking core of this team goes very deep with Karmageddon, Sassy Squash, Nina Millimeter, Reina Chaos, and Donna Party all being forces to be reckoned with. Not to mention, former All-Star blocker Blossom Bruiso has returned to the team from a brief retirement, and played in the May 22 bout. The Double Crossers’ jamming rotation will be lead by the six-year veteran, captain Julia Rosenwinkel, who is number two in the league in season points scored at 255. She will likely be joined by Indy Cent who is having a career year.

The jammer edge goes to The Fury, while the blocking edge goes to the Double Crossers. The Fury are the stronger, more athletic team, but are more penalty prone. The Double Crossers play smarter and use more strategy to play to their strengths. The championship is on the line Saturday night!
