Meet the first of the Haymarket Rioters to get called up to the Big Show!
This past weekend, a mid-season draft took place in which 3 skaters from the WCR farm team, known as the Haymarket Rioters, were chosen to fill openings on the home teams. Congrats to these ladies, whose hard work in training has paid off!
Says farm team coach Athena DeCrime, "Though Goldie Shocks! and I proud of the progress these first drafted Rioters have made, now that they're on teams, the gloves are off. We'd like to remind them that we brought them into this world and we can take them out!! See you on the track, ladies!"
Each of the 3 skaters answered these questions from intrepid WCR reporters:
1. Who the heck are you? What made you choose derby?
2. Now that you're on home teams, what are you looking forward to? Nervous about?
3. What do you think of when you hear the word "bacon"?
Rose Feratu, the Manic Attackers

1. I'm Rose Feratu, the illegitimate daughter of Count Dracula. I chose to play roller derby because its a quick and easy fresh blood supply that doesn't arouse a lot of suspicion.
2. I'm looking forward to rocking a Manictard with my most favoritest WCR team ever, the Manic Attackers. I'm not really nervous about anything other than maybe getting blocked by Hoosier Mama or Megan Formor. Thankfully, Malice in Chains is on MY team.
3. Bacon? Ever seen a bacon bra?
Shannanigan, The Fury

1. I'm a computer/sci-fi nerd who thinks that baking is a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon and who will probably talk your ear off about some book I just read while doing so. I also happen to have a long list of athletic pasttimes which have included inline skating, track and field, fencing, weightlifting, and tae kwon do. This all despite the fact that I'm so clumsy I run into walls just walking around the house. I think I ended up in derby because I've already spent most of my life running into things and falling down, so it seems like I'm not doing anything new.
2. I'm not sure what I'm most looking forward to, I'm still overwhelmed with fear at the idea of doing a real bout. I've also heard a nasty rumor that after my first practice there will be an initiation involving me, a stripper pole, and dancing. I'm not sure which of these things scares me more.
3. You know that really horrible "bacon explosion" thing? If you don't, imagine a giant brick of glistening meat wrapped in a shell of crispy woven bacon. Horrifying, and brought to you by the internet.
Myra Maines, the Double Crossers

1. I'm a perpetual academic. I have my PhD in clinical social work. I'm on faculty at the Institute for Clinical Social Work where I teach and conduct clinical research. I also have a private psychotherapy practice, seeing children and young adults. I’m often referred to by my clients as a “head shrinker.” When I’m not doing this or skating, I’m snowboarding, bike riding, hiking, listening to old school industrial and punk rock music. Whatever.
It’s Athena DeCrime’s fault that my life now belongs to derby. We worked together doing an intense clinical assessment of a family and I learned about the WCR from her. I was the punk rock athlete in high school (yes, sort of an oxymoron, I know) and when I heard about roller derby, I thought it was the ultimate combination of athleticism and a touch of alternative culture. Plus, it’s a great way to release any pent up angst of the day and get in the best shape of your life.
2. I’m excited to be able to skate with some of best veterans around and learn all I can from them. I’d love to be able to twist and weave in and out of the pack at the speed of light like Athena, Eva Dead, etc. I guess I wouldn’t mind taking an awesome hit that sends me into the crowd either. That might be kind of fun.
I think I’m most anxious about being able to put it all together. There’s so much to learn in terms of skating technique, strategy, rules, etc. It can be hard to integrate everything at the same time and avoid being hit!
3. Ick. I’m a vegetarian. Never liked bacon, even when I ate meat as a kid. Stinks up the house for days! Besides, I don’t cook. Raw bacon is probably not good for you.

Yay for new NAKED teammates!
not naked. she's wearing socks.
Um, I believe those are Fury socks, ca. 2007.
Punk vegetarian athletes of the world unite!
"Haymarket Rioters" Best derby team name ever. They should have a Memorial Day Massacre bout.
