The Second Wind faced off against the Bleeding Heartland Rollergirls Flatliners on Saturday at the UIC Pavilion in what looked like a narrow loss but turned into an exciting come from behind win. Second Wind beat Bleeding Heartland by a final score of 92-87, a very small margin considering Bleeding Heartland played furiously and Second Wind was down their high-flying co-captain, Ska Face.

The bout began business as usual for the Second Wind, with Mo Vengeance scoring a quick 4 points to give Chicago an early lead. As the first half rolled on, Bleeding Heartland took Second Wind to the mat for a ground and pound style game play and put up an impressive 26 points before the Second Wind could bounce back. Between Terror d’Bits and Nuck L. Sammy, Bleeding Heartland was scoring almost at will, keeping Tamikaze and Tomy Knockers busy working in tandem to hold the opposing jammers at bay as the first half was winding down. Second Wind came back to tie, but Bleeding Heartland kept inching away before the end of the first half, sending both teams to the locker room with the score locked at 42-40 in Bleeding Heartlands favor.

Second Wind came out firing in the second half and immediately took the lead back into Chicago’s hands. The lead seesawed early on, but the Second Wind turned the heat up on Bleeding Heartland, taking the fight back to the Flatliners. Behind killer blocking by T.S. Helliot, Dinah Party, Sassy Squash, AliSin Chains, Hermione Danger, Janicide Joplin and Rose Feratu, there was no turning back for the ladies in blue.

Jammer Mo Vengeance was the pinnacle for the Second Wind's win, scoring an impressive 19-point jam with just under seven minutes left in the bout. The entire team pulled together, dropping hit after massive hit to keep Bleeding Heartland at bay, with Second Wind coming out on top with a score of 92-87. The Second Wind capped an amazing season with a terrific win.

Tamikaze was awarded Player of the Game.

Dame Over and Dinah Party brought their blocking expertise to the Second Wind for the evening, while rookie Phoebe Fi Fo Fum added depth to the jammer pool. The high-flying Ska Face, one of the Second Wind’s co-captains, and the ever impressive Sunshine N Painbows, coupled with Hermione Danger and Tamikaze, were scoring at will against a completely rocked KCRW B Team.

The KCRW All Stars were sitting track side in support of their team as the beginning whistle blew. Ska Face and Sunshine N Painbows set the tone for the bout with the beginning few jams, netting 12 points collectively. The Second Wind jamming crew was insurmountable at the onset of the bout and there was no shortage of fancy footwork and airborne antics as the half pressed on.

Rose Feratu was pulling double duty for the Second Wind, not only scoring without mercy but adding power to a hard-hitting Chicago defense. AliSin Chains, co-captain Ada Hatelace, and T.S. Helliot were running an excellent blocking game, keeping the KCRW jammers and defense guessing all the way through the bout. With the end of the half looming, the Second Wind was already up 107-20 and weren't showing any signs of letting up.

Janicide Joplin and Mel Content were adding to the defensive strength of the Second Wind. Janicide Joplin was dropping Kansas City blockers like a sniper and Mel Content was toying with their jammers like a cat playing with a ball of yarn.

If there is anything to be said about the Second Wind’s ability to overcome, they came out in the first half acting like there was no loss at the last bout against Ohio. Both teams were playing for blood, and there was no turning back before both teams went to the locker rooms for the half. As the whistle called the first half, the Second Wind was up 129-35.

The ladies from Kansas City came out swinging, starting the second half getting 8 quick points on the strength and power of jammer Black Ice. Plan B’s efforts were a message to the Second Wind that they weren't going to take the score lightly and worked feverishly to mount a counter attack. Dinah Party and Rose Feratu kept the hits coming in the second half and were both instrumental in helping the Second Wind increase their lead.

Tamikaze was still hot on the track and was scoring quick points alongside the rest of the incredibly talented Second Wind jammers. The only thing slowing the Second Wind was penalties, and as the second half rolled on the penalty box was starting to look like a revolving door. During the 10th jam of the second half there was a jammer-less jam, the bout creeping to a near halt as the crowd watched what looked pointless; that is until the point-scorers were back on the track.

Kansas City rallied on the last jam, but it was too little too late. Black Ice’s 23-point jam was exciting enough, but couldn’t close the large point spread between the two teams and the Second Wind went on to with the bout 210-103.

It was good to see Dame Over on the track after what seemed like an eternity and it was just as great to see Rose Feratu jamming and blocking like an elite professional. Rookie jammer, Phoebe Fi Fo Fum was spot-on throughout the bout and was standing tall and looking good on the track. There was excellent jamming from both benches and a wonderful showing by both teams defensively, given the score. Plan B’s Black Ice was a jamming machine, but couldn’t get their team rallied to win.

Sunshine N Painbows was awarded Player of the Game for excellent jamming and blocking, helping the Second Wind to an overwhelming win.

Both teams were fit to fight Saturday night with the Second Wind striking hard from the very beginning and never really letting go of the lead until near the end of the first half. Ska Face started the scoring pace with 9 points in the first jam followed by Mo Vengeance, Sunshine N Painbows and Zoe Trocious mounting points through the “hit-it-and-quit-it” technique. As the first half barreled on, blockers T.S. Helliot, Tamikazi, Rose Feratu, Janicide Joplin and Val Capone were quick to keep the Ohio jammers at bay and made short work of their defensive play.

Ohio didn't start the bout out strong, but finally got their footing as Texas Chainsaw Sasskicker, HellionBOI and Pearl Rogi started a scoring run before the first whistle. In three jams HellionBOI and Pearl Rogi scored 11 points, and coupled with Sasskicker’s two Grand Slams in the 11th jam, the Ohio Roller Girls started to seriously chip away at the Second Wind’s lead. Ava Tarr was making short work of the Second Wind defense late in the first half and was instrumental in getting her jammers through the pack.

Both teams’ defense began to pick up and the bout turned into a hit parade, but not before the Ohio team could even the score at 36, with less than nine minutes left in the half. Turn four looked like a demolition derby but it didn't slow Zoe Trocious as she scored 10 points to get the Second Wind the lead back and their defense turned on the jets and kept the pack pace fast like an Indy car race. Before the half ended, Mo Vengeance was taken out in turn two and then took a nasty hit from Ohio’s Dixie Heartless in turn four. As she got to her feet, she was issued an illegal procedure penalty and sent to the box (much to the crowds chagrin).

With a one-sided start and a methodical, grinding pace looming on the horizon, the bout had the appearance of “business as usual” for the Second Wind at home. Twelve minutes into the half, both teams started to wake up as Ohio worked away at the Second Wind’s lead. Unfortunately for the Ohio team, the Second Wind blockers were on a mission to target each Buckeye State Betty with religious fervor. Both teams were working to gain a foothold in the bout, but the Second Wind wound up on top as the whistle blew and both teams went into the locker room with the score set at 64-40.

The penalty box was a revolving door for the Second Wind as the second half started. Jammer, Mo Vengeance, spent the first three jams of the half in the box and the defensive effort for the Second Wind stepped up their game to keep the team alive. With solid blocking and passing the star, the Second Wind was able to hold the Ohio Roller Girls to just three points as they got their scoring runs back on track.

The Second Wind blocking crew was making short work of the Ohio defense, and teamwork was paramount as they powered through the second half. Tamikazi and Zoe Trocious were taking massive amounts of punishment from Ohio, but managed to stay on their lines and score at will. Ada Hatelace, Hermione Danger and Janicide Joplin were holding fast and picking up their game throughout to keep the lead for the Second Wind.

Ohio co-captain, Phoenix Bunz, coupled with Bratislava Bruiser and Ava Tarr were working to keep their team afloat. As the bout powered on, Ohio was slowly chipping away at the Second Wind lead and bringing the game closer. With penalties mounting for the Second Wind, Ohio took full advantage of the players off the track and began racking up the points.

The Second Wind wasn't going to take a loss lying down and mounted a comeback of their own. Two jams later, Ska Face, behind the excellent blocking of Hermione Danger, scored an incredible 20 points to get her team over the century mark and the lead again. Just as the bout appeared sealed up, the Ohio Roller Girls mounted a major attack against the Second Wind.

HellionBOI, backed by Phoenix Bunz, Loraine Acid and Outa My Wayman helped the Ohio team regain the lead and keep it against the home team. HellionBOI answered with her own six Grand Slams and took off with the lead. It wasn't for a lack of trying; it was only because the Second Wind couldn't stay out of the box long enough to keep the lead they had attained. Ohio held steadfast to their game play and worked a smart win out of Windy City’s B-Team. Both sides of the scoreboard were working hard to get the win, but the Ohio Roller Girls ran away with it at the end and beat out the Second Wind 121-110. The Second Wind faces off against Kansas City’s B-Team on September 10th at the UIC Pavilion. Player of the game went to Ohio’s HellionBOI for her impressive come-back run at the end of the bout.

Second Wind wins the Skyline Cup with 166-77 victory over Gotham’s Wall Street Traitors

In an epic meeting of monstrous proportions, the Windy City Rollers’ Second Wind closed out Gotham’s Wall Street Traitors 166-77 on July 30th at the UIC Pavilion. The Second Wind pulled their might together and turned the evening into an all-out slaughtering, demolishing and deconstructing a win-backed Gotham B-Team. The Wall Street Traitors brought the Skyline Cup to the Pavilion and put it on the line against the dashing dames in electric blue, only to lose it for the first time since its inception in 2007.

WST brought their taking-a-knee-and-walling-in-front-of-the-jammer-line technique to the track. Though it brought them success in the past, the Second Wind was easy to adapt to it and maneuver around a sluggish WST blocker package. Second Wind jammers Ska Face and Wreck N Shrew brought the points quickly in the beginning with the “hit it & quit it” technique. Tamikaze and Indycent added early points for the Second Wind, both tallying grand slams apiece.

There was no lack of physical presence on the track either from the Second Wind. Chicago body-pounding came by way of Unicoroner, Hermione Danger, AliSin Chains, Mo Vengeance and Zombea Arthur. These ladies were pivotal in holding WST jammers Brazilian Nut, Double Clutch and Care Bear Scare. The Second Wind had the WST rocked on their heels to the point that they had to call a timeout within the first seven minutes and reevaluate their attack.

As the half poured on, the Second Wind jammer crew scored on the WST at will and tallied an impressive 101 points before the final whistle for the first half of the bout. There was a moment of hope for the WST in the first half coming during the second to last jam. Double Clutch, taking punishment but staying mobile, racked up an impressive 4 grand slams behind two major penalties in a row by Second Wind Captain, Ska Face.

The Traitors attempted to bring a bag of tricks into the UIC Pavilion, but the Second Wind stole the bag, ate the candy and ran off in a sugar-filled rage to score an unprecedented 101 points in the first half. The Skyline Cup was no longer safe at this point. Between the consistent hitting from the Second Wind blockers and the scoring ability from their jammer line, there was no real question as to who would win the Cup. The fact of the matter was, The Second Wind wanted the win, saw the opportunity, adapted, and overcame with extreme intensity. They took the tenacity of the Windy City and brought it to the five boroughs and beat The WST the same way the U.S. beat the Soviets in ’80.

As the second half began, Wreck N Shrew and Sunshine N Painbows came out swinging. Wreck N Shrew scored a grand slam and Sunshine N Painbows added four impressive grand slams of her own. Both teams were working the pack like a meat grinder, but the Second Wind proved to be tougher and slowly broke down The WST blocking abilities. Case in point was Janicide Joplin’s impressive blocking in the 27th jam allowing Ska Face to score a grand slam, and dropping WST jammer, Brazilian Nut, on numerous occasions. The WST’s will was being put to the test and the Second Wind wasn’t letting up at all.

Double Clutch was clutch for The WST and Megahurtz was laying hits left and right, but their abilities and teammates couldn’t handle the awesome wall of blue the Second Wind was putting up, nor the unmatched scoring power behind their jammers.

When the final whistle blew, the Second Wind dropped a massive bomb on The WST and abruptly took the Skyline Cup from them. Once the scoring started, the Second Wind broke in with a multitude of monstrous hits and made mincemeat out of The WST. From start to finish, it was no contest and so long as the Second Wind kept the momentum going, the Skyline Cup was theirs for the taking. If they can keep the pace and bring that ferocity every time they face Gotham, The Skyline Cup will never leave Chicago again. Sunshine N Painbows was awarded Player of the Game for the Second Wind. They play their next bout on August 27th at 6 p.m. vs. the Ohio Rollers Girls.

131-95 victory over Hell's Belles gives The Fury tie for longest winning streak

By Guest Writer grumpdawg

The Hell’s Belles and The Fury squared off on May 21st at UIC Pavilion with high stakes on the line for both teams. The Fury, coming off a 131-93 victory over the Manic Attackers, looked to continue their dominant march to the Ivy King Cup and, in the process, to match the all-time win WCR win streak held by the Belles. The resurgent Belles, fresh off a 171-89 win over the Double Crossers, were looking for a big win and a possible spot in the Championship, as well as to protect their win streak record from the relentless Fury. Not since the opening bout of the 2010 season had the Fury lost a bout, but the Belles looked to remind them of the taste of defeat. Despite a valiant effort from the Belles, when the hard hitting action came to a close, The Fury were victorious and claimed a share of the all-time win streak.

Both teams played intense defense to start the bout, but standout Fury jammer Kola Loka drew first blood with a four points in the first jam. Not to be outdone, Belles captain Shocka Conduit tied the score in the second jam. Behind the blocking prowess of Deb Autry, Dinah Party, Yameet Ur Doom, Brawla Poundstone, Hermione Danger, and Mya Ssault; and the jamming of Unicoroner, Pominatrix, Hermione Danger, Luxe Capacitor, and Shocka Conduit, the Belles kept it close through the first seven jams and were down by only seven points with the score at 18-11.

Keeping the pressure on in the ninth jam, Belles jammer Hermione Danger sped around the outside, despite a 4-2 Fury pack advantage, and picked up lead, but a jammer knock-down by Sargentina limited the damage to only 1 point. Leading up to the end of the first period, suffocating defense led by Ol’ Drrrty Go-Go, Sargentina, and Tori Adore limited the Belles to 16 points, while they opened holes for Fury jammers Kola Loka, Ska Face, and Jackie Daniels to build a lead of 68-28 heading into the break.

In the second period, The Fury gradually built on their lead to almost 60 points but the Belles kept the pressure on and charged back in the tenth on a 20-point jam from Hermione Danger. With Fury jammer Ol’ Drrrty Go-Go in the box to start the next jam, it looked like Belles jammer Unicoroner would have a chance to bring the Belles within striking distance, but a hard hit sent Uni to the floor and Go-Go was able to score three points before Uni called off the jam. The Belles refused to back down with Pominatrix picking up a hard-fought four points in the twelfth jam to cut The Fury lead to 33 at 100-73. But over the next several jams The Fury pack reasserted control and jammers Kola Loka and Ska Face extended the lead to 122-79. Still, the Belles were not finished and Pominatrix and Shocka Conduit cut the lead to 122-93 over the next two jams to set up a final showdown between Kola Loka and Hermione Danger with a 3-2 pack advantage for The Fury. Player of the Game Kola Loka got lead jammer and Hermione Danger was sent to the box on a major blocking to the back. Nevertheless, once again showing the never say die attitude they displayed throughout the bout, Hermione was released when Kola was sent to the box and scored the final two points of the bout before time expired, leaving The Fury victorious by the score of 131-95.

Hell's Belles warm with 171-89 victory over Double Crossers

The Hell’s Belles are red-hot right now. Despite having a fairly new lineup and coming off a losing season last year, they’re in the running now for second place in the league. For the Double Crossers, the shoe is on the other foot. Though their core is solid and they have a fairly deep jammer pool, they just can’t seem to get into a groove. When the final whistle blew, the Hell’s Belles beat the Double Crossers 171-89 and sent a message to the Manic Attackers to be looking over their shoulders.

The second bout of the evening was very much like the first in the fact that both teams were dishing out punishment in massive quantities. Hell’s Belles blockers Pominatrix, Mya Ssault and Dinah Party were throwing hits like it was a football hitting practice. The Double Crossers weren’t slouching in the hit department at all either. Team captain Georgia on Yer Behind rallied Sunshine N Painbows, Tina Flay, Joanie Utah and Norma Lee Wright to hand out blow after blow to the Hell’s Belles’ offense.

Team captain for the Double Crossers, Julia Rosenwinkel, was still out due to injury, so Double Crosser jammers had to give that extra push just to keep the team alive. The Hell’s Belles were jamming Shocka Conduit, Zombea Arthur, Unicoroner and Deb Autry regularly with excellent yields. In the first jam alone, Zombea Arthur scored 14 points and got the ball rolling for the Hell’s Belles. Though Dame Over answered back with an impressive grand slam two jams later, all the momentum shifted in the Hell’s Belles favor.

Karmageddon and Indycent were both working hard to keep the pressure on the Belles and were looking good early on in the bout. The Double Crossers also jammed rookie Dani Get Your Guns, but she just couldn’t get anything going past Hermoine Danger and Yameet Ur Doom’s blocking prowess. Tina Flay was closing out a number of the Hell’s Belles jammers as well, dropping the hammer on Zombea Arthur and allowing Double Crosser jammers to chip away at the lead.

As the half was drawing to an end, the emotions were running high for the Hell’s Belles and they were steamrolling the Double Crossers at every turn. Captain Shocka Conduit was impressive during the last jam of the half scoring 23 points and setting the score at 96-27 in favor of the Hell’s Belles. If the Double Crossers were going to get a win, they would need to bring their A-game into the second half.

As the whistle started the second half, both teams were throwing hits feverishly. Pominatrix scored seven points early on and brought her team over the century mark. The score was 106-27 for the Hell’s Belles and the game turned into a run-away for them. The Double Crossers were throwing everything they had at the Hell’s Belles. Jamming Sunshine N Painbows, Abbey and Dani Get Your Guns on a steady rotation still wasn’t enough to pull them out of the hole they were in.

Zombea Arthur and Pominatrix were impressive throughout the second half. Zombea Arthur proved why she’s a speed skating champion and navigated through the pack almost effortlessly. Pominatrix was as agile as a leopard. She leapt over a falling Sunshine N Painbows to get a second grand slam and continue to push her team’s score over the edge.

Abbey, Dani Get Your Guns and Sunshine N Painbows were working overtime to get points for the Double Crossers. Between the three of them, they were able to keep the scoring steady for their team, but just couldn’t mount enough to have a good run for the lead. Indycent, Joanie Utah and Miss D. Meaner were working the pack hard and helping keep their team afloat but Shocka Conduit and Deb Autry were pivotal in the last few jams of the bout. Both ladies scored grand slams and took the wind out of the Double Crossers’ sails. In the final jam, Luxe Capacitor got it up to 88 m.p.h. and racked up an impressive, high-speed 13 points that solidified the Hell’s Belles win of 171-89.

Deb Autry was named Player of the Game. Though both teams fought well, the Hell’s Belles were on a scoring frenzy that just couldn’t be answered. They face off against the undefeated Fury on May 21 in hopes for a third win and shot at second place. The Double Crossers are taking on the Manic Attackers and looking for a chance to tally a win before the end of the home season. Both bouts are shaping up to be pivotal for all teams. If The Fury wins against the Hell’s Belles, they will be one game away from having the longest win streak. If the Hell’s Belles beat The Fury, not only will they knock The Fury off their winning streak, but could potentially tie for second place with the Manic Attackers, if the Manic Attackers lose to the Double Crossers. If the Manic Attackers win against the Double Crossers, they solidify their spot in second place and have a shot at the Ivy King Cup. If the Double Crossers can tally a win in the next bout, they would affect the Manic Attackers’ chance at a finals shot, and give themselves a chance at redemption and a win before the season’s out.

Saturday night’s second bout was a serious barn-burner. The Manic Attackers faced off against a hungry Hell’s Belles team and won the bout 103-95, taking it down to the last jam. The Manics and the Belles both were bringing everything they had to the track including a hurt Val Capone blocking for the raucous ladies in electric Manic blue. “If I didn’t wanna play hard, I would play darts,” said Capone as she took the track nursing a hairline fracture and generally not caring too much about the injury. With that being said, the Manic Attackers showed their softer side honoring their spirit animal during their intro and embracing the beauty of Mother Nature.

Early in the bout saw an Amazonian jam between Ruth Enasia and the towering inferno, Deb Autry. Both ladies brought their A-game to the table but Deb Autry came out on top, scoring three points. With these two giants setting a precedent for their teams, both the Hell’s Belles and the Manic Attackers were going to make a run of it.

If the Chicago Bears had their Monsters of the Midway, the Manic Attackers have an equally aggressive and dominant entity behind Bork Bork Bork, AliSin Chains and Mo Vengeance. They were mashing up the track and leaving a red streak of Hell’s Belles carnage. Their hitting didn’t go unanswered, though, and Hermoine Danger, Dinah Party and Yameet Ur Doom were drawing hits in for the Belles. Halfway into the first half, the bout was turning into a blocking practice as both teams’ blockers and jammers were laying waste to each other as they mangled their way through the pack. It was as if there was no sacred ground and no team member untouched. Even with Val Capone's hairline fracture, she made short work of the Hell’s Belles’ jammers and blockers alike.

Both sides of the benches had a number of excellent jams through the melee of hits. The Manic Attackers stood on top of Zoe Trocious, Beth Amphetamine, Ruth Enasia and Wreck N Shrew as the Hell’s Belles were relying heavily on Zombea Arthur, Shocka Conduit, Deb Autry and Pominatrix.

As the half drew to an end the Manic Attackers’ hard-hitting slowed the Hell’s Belles, but didn’t stop them. Behind excellent blocking on both sides of the scoreboard, both teams had a chance of walking away with a win. Halftime came with the Manic Attackers up 64-38.

The ladies from both sides came out slugging after the half with Shocka Conduit scoring a grand slam for the Hell’s Belles and Zoe Trocious answering right back. The hard hitting continued and Bork Bork Bork was making mince meat of the Hell’s Belles blocking crew. The Hell’s Belles proved their second half stamina with Zombea Arthur skating as though she was beginning-of-the-game fresh. The Manic Attackers were answering back with strong jams from Ruth Enasia who was employing the “hit it and quit it” technique.

As the second half wore on, it was evident that the Manic Attackers were running out of gas and the Hell’s Belle’s were trying to capitalize on their low energy. Pitting Ruth Enasia and Zombea Arthur against each other, it was as though David was facing Goliath again, only this time with serious sass. Zombea Arthur brought four points against Ruth Enasia and the Hell’s Belles were off on mounting a serious comeback.

Both teams were feeding off the fever pitch swirling inside the walls of UIC Pavilion. Hermoine Danger and Yameet Ur Doom were working well together, helping to combine a one-two blow to the Manic Attackers and geting their own jammers through the pack. Within the last ten minutes of the bout, the energy was shifting between both teams and you could almost hear the breath of the true fans in the stands. While the Hell’s Belles were dishing out punishment, their fans were raising the roof, and as the Manic Attackers mounted their fight, their fan base was peeling the paint with their exuberance.

Deb Autry managed a 15-point jam with less than three minutes to go and the intensity reached a near-breaking point. The crowd wasn’t going to let this bout go without a powerful rally behind their troops. Shocka Conduit backed Deb Autry with a grand slam, bringing the Hell’s Belles to within eight points with enough time for one last jam.

The crowd was on fire with the Hell’s Belles on the cusp of tallying their second win for the season. The Manic Attackers lined up Beth Amphetamine against Deb Autry. Beth Amphetamine took the field and got lead jammer, blowing through the pack like a wraith and almost immediately calling it off. The Manic Attackers won 103-95, but not without a strong showing by the Hell’s Belles. For all that it’s worth, the bout was an excellent show of physical prowess on both sides. The Manic Attackers stand against The Fury in the next bout while the Hell’s Belles look to add a second win against the Double Crossers in the second bout.
