The Charitable Side of the Windy City Rollers: Beyond the Bouts
In addition to bout donations, WCR participates in various fund-raising events throughout the year. Here are a few of the major events in which our members have taken part:
Things My Beard Can Lift – Stats god Scorey Feldman collected donations for Off the Street Club , Chicago’s oldest boys’ and girls’ club. For each $100 he received, he added an additional pound to the weight he lifted with, yes, his beard! Starting modestly with a Millenium Falcon model and an iron R2-D2 sculpture, he gradually worked his way up to a 50-pound boy. WCR was proud to have Scorey lift the Ivy King Cup and a pair of skates at the half-time of our February 20 bout!
The Chicago Polar Plunge – In early March, three brave skaters and one brave ref battled freezing temperatures and blinding snow to jump into Lake Michigan, raising funds for the Special Olympics in the process.
Walk & Roll – Several WCR members skated in the American Cancer Society’s annual Walk & Roll, raising money to fund cancer research and support programs. The W&R has become a WCR tradition, with representatives of the league participating each year since our first season.
HelpTequila.com – In August 2007, veteran skater Tequila Mockingbird fell and seriously injured her spinal cord during a bout. Since then she has regained some movement in all of her limbs due to sheer perseverance and hard work, and she remains positive about the direction of her recovery. This year, proceeds from the annual guest captains’ auction for the Black vs. White Scrimmage went to support Tequila.
